Experience Japan's Grand Summer Festival: The Tenjin Matsuri
The biggest summer festival in Osaka is the Tenjin Matsuri. The Tenjin Matsuri, one of Japan's three major festivals (Gion Matsuri, Tenjin Matsuri, Kanda Matsuri), is a famous event at Osaka Tenmangu Shrine (affectionately known as "Tenma's Tenjin-san" by the locals). This festival, which dates back to the Heian period, is said to calm the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane.
The history of the festival is ancient, believed to have started in the year 951 during the Tenryaku era. With a history of over 1000 years, the festival is held annually on July 24th and 25th. The 24th is the eve of the festival, and the 25th is the main festival day. On the night of the 25th, the Funatogyo, where more than 100 boats traverse the Okawa River (formerly the Yodo River), takes place, and fireworks are set off.
The main fireworks display is launched from 19:30 to 20:50. The spectacle of the bonfires from about 100 large boats intermingling with the fireworks creates a fantastical scene that can only be witnessed at the Tenjin Matsuri. As large crowds gather, it is recommended to arrive early.
