In Osaka, with affection, it is called "Sumiyosan". It is the main shrine of about 2300 Sumiyoshi shrines nationwide and is the highest-ranked shrine in Settsu Province. The number of New Year's Day worshippers exceeds 2 million every year, and the scene is broadcast live on various TV stations.

Since ancient times, it has been worshipped as the god of "safe navigation", "purification", "agriculture", "waka poetry", "martial arts", and "sumo wrestling", and its establishment dates back 1800 years. The deities enshrined from the first to the fourth shrines are "Sokotsutsu no Onomikoto", "Nakatsutsu no Onomikoto", "Uwatsutsu no Onomikoto", and "Empress Jingu".

The four main shrines, divided into four, are arranged in a unique configuration, with the first to third shrines lined up vertically and the fourth shrine horizontally, like a fleet sailing on the open sea. The four "Sumiyoshi-zukuri" main shrines that enshrine Sumiyoshi Okami and Empress Jingu are designated as national treasures. The precincts have many cultural properties, including the famous Sorihashi Bridge. Annual events include the Sumiyoshi Festival, the Rice Planting Ritual, the Unoha Ritual, and the famous "Hatsutatsu Mairi", which prays for business prosperity from early morning on the first day of each month.
